The official grand opening for the “grand” site took place in June, and included daylong activities, beginning with sunrise yoga, an afternoon autograph signing with Baseball Hall of Fame and Cubs right fielder, Andre Dawson, to the movie “Field of Dreams,” shown under the stars at the site’s Performance Pavilion.

Nestled on Dundee Road (between Wolf Road and Northgate Parkway), the spectacular $38M renovation offers something for everyone. Made possible by an Intergovernmental Agreement between the Wheeling Park District, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, and the Village of Wheeling, Heritage Park provides long-lasting benefits back to Wheeling and other communities along the Des Plaines River.

The completed phase one of the multi-phased project includes 10-acre Lake Heritage, the site’s namesake, offering scenic beauty, encouraging natural habitats and native species to thrive, and providing important flood management. An important part of the renovation, six basins at Heritage Park can hold millions of gallons of water. Their design allows for additional expanded active use, with open fields for sports like soccer or flag football -- and water storage if ever needed.

A nearly mile pathway looping the lake offers opportunities for recreation—a walk, jog, or leisurely stop at a park bench or stone plateau along the banks. Youth and adult recreational team sports take front and center with lighted, high-caliber synthetic-turf fields, a two-story concession/officials' building, ample spectator stands, and convenient parking. A beautiful and blended footbridge allows for easy access to neighborhoods and walkways.

The Performance Pavilion and natural amphitheater on the southwest of the lake, is home to arts, culture and music, including the Park District’s free summer entertainment series. Grass areas throughout provide ample open space for picnics and family gatherings. A large, rustic picnic shelter offers scenic views and can be rented for special occasions.

Later phases of the project include plans for a children’s playground, additional entranceways and other amenities. The Heritage Park campus is also home to the Wheeling Park District’s Community Recreation Center, a multi-use facility that hosts recreation and educational programming, Wheeling Park District Fitness Center with indoor track, pool and swim zone, and the Family Aquatic Center, the hub for outdoor summertime water fun. The Park District's championship golf course, Chevy Chase Country Club is just a short drive away.

The Heritage Park project included strong support from the community as well as project partners, the Metroplitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and the Village of Wheeling. Wheeling Park District and heritage Park were recently recognized by Illinois Association of Park Dsitricts for its outstanding contributions with the "Best of the Best" award in Intergovernmental Cooperation.

The Wheeling Park District Executive Director, Board of Commissioners, staff, and project partners, would like to thank you for your input and support. We hope you will visit Heritage Park often to wander, play, and discover.
