Park District plans opening for ’grand’ Heritage Park

The Wheeling Park District is set to welcome all ages to Heritage Park, a 100+-acre nature, recreation and community gathering place, with a Grand Opening Celebration on Sunday, June 7.
The exciting opening for such a “grand” site includes free day-long activities, beginning with sunrise yoga, an afternoon autograph signing with Baseball Hall-of-Famer, National League All-Star, and Cubs right fielder, Andre Dawson, to the movie “Field of Dreams,” shown under the stars at the site’s Performance Pavilion.
Nestled on Dundee Road (between Wolf Road and Northgate Parkway), this soon-to-be unveiled $38M renovation offers something for everyone. Made possible by an Intergovernmental Agreement between the Wheeling Park District, Village of Wheeling, and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater
Chicago, Heritage Park provides long-lasting benefits back to Wheeling and other communities along the
Des Plaines River.
Phase one of the multi-phased project showcased June 7, includes 10-acre Lake Heritage, the site’s namesake, offering scenic beauty and natural habitats that encourage native species to thrive. A 1.3-mile pathway looping the lake offers opportunities for recreation—a walk, jog, or leisurely stop at a park bench or stone plateau along the banks. Youth and adult recreational sports take front and center with lighted, synthetic-turf fields, a two-story concession building, ample spectator stands, and convenient parking. The Performance Pavilion and natural amphitheater on the southwest of the lake, will be home to arts, culture and music, including the Park District’s free summer concert series and Friday Night Movie Nights. Grass areas throughout provide ample open space for picnics and family gatherings. A large, rustic picnic shelter offers scenic views and can be rented for special occasions. Later phases of the project include the opening of a walking bridge and boardwalk, as well as plans for a children’s playground, additional entranceways and other amenities. The Heritage Park campus is also home to the Park District’s Community Recreation Center, a multi-use facility that hosts recreation and educational programming for all ages, Wheeling Park District Fitness Center, and the Family Aquatic Center, the hub for summertime water fun.
The Wheeling Park District Executive Director, Board of Commissioners, staff, and project partners, would like to thank you for your input, support and patience during the project. We hope you are as excited as we are, to bring Heritage Park to the community.
